KABUL (Reuters) - Re-elected Afghan President Hamid Karzai vowed to form an inclusive government on Tuesday after stern warnings from Western supporters he would have to work harder to root out corruption.

Afghan election officials on Monday canceled a needless presidential run-off vote after Karzai's only rival, former foreign minister Abdullah Abdullah, withdrew citing serious concerns about the election.

The outcome leaves Washington and other Western supporters to work with a partner whose legitimacy has been questioned, while Karzai himself faces the prospect of having to work with a newly strengthened opposition.

Afghanistan endured weeks of political uncertainty after the August 20 first round was marred by widespread fraud, a crisis deepened by a resurgent Taliban who had vowed to disrupt the vote.

Karzai's return removes at least one obstacle as President Barack Obama weighs whether to send up to 40,000 more troops to Afghanistan, where violence this year reached its worst levels since the Taliban were in 2001

I'm not so sure.

If we are not committed to winning in Afghanistan, which to me means at least at some point bringing OBL to justice (or killing him ... whichever), then our continued presence there simply doesn't make sense.

Now that he's president, if you question his tax policies, energy plans or health-care ambitions, you are “hoping he will fail” — and that, with the help of roundabout reasoning, is tantamount to hoping we cannot transcend race. -Jonah Goldberg, 8/20/09

Is OBL in Afghanistan?

Also, I don't think the Taliban can be defeated. They are a ragtag group of Afghans who have one thing in common - they are against a foreign occupation.

They can be defeated. ANY group can be defeated. I don't think the commander in chief has the stomach for what it would take, though (I could be wrong, but one doesn't usually take this long to decide if they are going to go with the recommendation offered them).

I don't know where OBL is: I really think he's long dead and all the videos we see of him today were shot years ago.

OF COURSE they can be defeated. But they will not be until we, the people, determine that is a priority.

They can be defeated? So you are saying that all drug dealers can be killed or locked up and no one will ever sell drugs again?

I disagree - we can never kill all the Talban and drug dealers. Even if you killed the current members, others will step up to sell the drugs etc.

Here is another question. You believe we can stop all drug dealers, right (all Talban too)? Can we kill every marijuana plant in the world?

We can ... but we don't have to in order to stop the trade in the United States.

We know how it gets here and we know how it's distributed (and mostly by whom). It needs to become a national passion to rid ourselves of it though... and it is definitely not.
